Lest We Forget
Thursday night brought the club an audio visual show created by Derek Rootham, based around the First World War memorials that were raised in Newcastle and the surrounding Northumberland area.
Derek's project started earlier in the year whilst photographing "The Response", which was raised
"TO COMMEMORATE THE RAISING OF THE B COMPANY
9TH BATTALION AND THE 16TH, 18TH AND 19TH SERVICE
BATTALIONS, NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS, BY THE
NEWCASTLE AND GATESHEAD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AUGUST – OCTOBER 1914
THE GIFT OF SIR GEORGE RENWICK BT DL AND LADY RENWICK / MCMXXIII".

This got Derek wondering just how many memorials were in the area. Checking online with the Imperial War Museum he found there were a great number but few actual clear images. Derek then reached a decision to concentrate on Newcastle and Northumberland.
Over spring and summer, Derek travelled the area, capturing images, and after a false start (when he realised some of the memorials were only for WW2), he produced a stunning audio visual show, backed off with a perfect musical accompaniment. At 25 minutes, some may think it long, but it is worth taking a little of your time to view it, to remember those who gave all of theirs.
